Surgeons remove magnets from girl's abdomen in Yekaterinburg

Surgeons extracted a five-centimeter chain of magnets from a child«s abdomen during an emergency operation.
In Yekaterinburg, doctors saved five-year-old Ulyana, who swallowed magnets. The little girl ate 10 magnetic balls, which connected to each other through the walls of internal organs in her abdomen and damaged them. Medics note that the situation could have ended in the child«s death, but doctors intervened in time.
«The little girl felt unwell, and the family came for a consultation with the local pediatrician. To rule out pneumonia, a chest X-ray was performed. Thanks to this, on the image in the stomach area, diagnosticians discovered a chain of magnetic balls that had injured the organ walls. Due to the threat to life, Ulyana was promptly hospitalized to Children«s City Clinical Hospital No. 9, where she received all necessary assistance», said Tatiana Savinova, Deputy Governor and Minister of Health of Sverdlovsk Oblast.
The girl underwent surgery and the magnetic chain, five centimeters long, was removed. After the surgery, the little girl stayed for another ten days in the emergency surgery department, and then she was discharged home. Now, nothing threatens Ulyana«s life.
Medics reminded that magnetic construction sets are dangerous for children. Little children mistake the bright balls for candy, try to separate the magnets with their teeth, and swallow construction set parts during play. Two or more elements, entering the intestinal loops, attract each other, causing perforation of the walls and provoking a serious complication — peritonitis.
