Seven inspiring stories of Tyumen doctors saving lives

Tyumen doctors save thousands of lives every day. For most of us, this happens almost unnoticed, but some stories still become widely known, and we want to share them with you. This article collects seven medical cases — from a lucky rescue after a high-altitude fall to a unique bone transplant.
Removed a Giant Blood Clot

One day, a very critical patient was brought to Clinical Hospital No. 3: the man was losing consciousness, his speech was impaired, his face was contorted, and the left side of his body was paralyzed. Clearly, it was a stroke.
Doctors found a blood clot in his carotid artery. Neurologist Zhakhonbek Latipov and angiosurgeon Baknazar Abdykadyrov performed a highly complex operation lasting over half an hour to save the Tyumen resident.
“A timely ambulance call and clear teamwork are the keys to a successful outcome in stroke. In this case, every minute counted, and we managed to return the patient to a full life,” said Dr. Latipov.
The surgeon extracted a clot measuring almost 2 cm from the artery. Blood flow was successfully restored. And thanks to rehabilitation, the man regained his speech, facial symmetry, and mobility on his left side.
Pulled a Child Back from the Brink After a High Fall

This case occurred at Clinical Hospital No. 2 in early September. An ambulance delivered a girl to the hospital who had fallen from a great height. We wrote about a similar situation on September 7: at that time, a teenager fell from a window on Muravlenko Street.
The child was literally covered in injuries: doctors diagnosed a closed abdominal injury, liver and spleen rupture, bleeding; contusion, rupture of both lungs, heart bruise, closed craniocerebral trauma, severe brain contusion, multiple fractures of the lower limbs and facial skeleton.
The girl was urgently transferred to the operating room. Surgeons, traumatologists, anesthesiologists, and maxillofacial surgeons simultaneously worked to save her life. First, they stopped the bleeding and fixed the fractures. Her condition was stabilized, and the girl was placed in a medically induced coma on a ventilator for 166 hours.
“From the first days, in addition to treatment, rehabilitation began, and multidisciplinary meetings of specialists were held daily,” noted the doctor — anesthesiologist-resuscitator at Clinical Hospital No. 2 Alexander Akhmatov.
When the patient began to recover, she was transferred to the traumatology and orthopedics department of the children«s inpatient unit. She has now been discharged.
One in 50,000 Cases

As often happens, a 57-year-old man from Tyumen did not pay much attention to his blood pressure problems. Uncontrolled hypertension eventually landed him on the operating table at Clinical Hospital No. 1.
The Tyumen resident suffered an aortic dissection — a rare condition that occurs in 20 people per million. To save him, doctors performed a seven-hour Borst operation, also known as the “elephant trunk” procedure.
“To prevent rupture of the main vessel and malperfusion of vital organs, prosthetic replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic arch was performed using a hybrid prosthesis under conditions of artificial circulation and stopped heart,” clarified the head of the cardio-surgical department No. 1 of Clinical Hospital No. 1, cardiovascular surgeon Lusine Arutyunyan.
In the end, everything went successfully. The man is already home, and his life is no longer threatened. However, he may now need prosthetic replacement of the descending aorta.
Saved a Teenager with Aneurysms

A 13-year-old Tyumen resident was found to have congenital aneurysms in his lungs. Yes, this happens: due to incorrect structure, the artery and vein were intertwined and could rupture at any moment, leading to massive bleeding.
Surgery was needed. Doctors at Clinical Hospital No. 2 convened a consultation: the fact is that such interventions are usually performed on adults, and this method was used for a child for the first time. Surgeons, anesthesiologists, and pediatricians at the medical consultation decided to proceed with the operation.

“Through a puncture of the femoral vein, the exact localization of the pathological areas was determined, and special devices were installed in the feeding vessels to prevent pathological blood flow into the aneurysms,” said the head of the department of X-ray surgical methods of diagnosis and treatment, Myasnik Arabkhanyan.
The young man was soon discharged from the hospital. He now feels well and has returned to his normal life and studies.
Preserved the Ability to Become a Mother

We often talk about unique operations that take place in Tyumen, in the largest hospitals with advanced equipment. But there are also unique rescue stories in small institutions. This case occurred in Nizhnyaya Tavda, at Regional Hospital No. 15.
A local resident came to the doctors complaining of acute abdominal pain. They discovered she had an ectopic pregnancy. The situation was complicated by the discovery of benign tumors near her ovaries.
The doctors had to work very carefully to help the woman. In the end, everything worked out: the Tyumen woman was saved, and it was also possible to preserve her reproductive organs.
Transplanted a Destroyed Bone

A 24-year-old Tyumen woman had pain in her wrist for about a year. Doctors examined her and discovered a very rare pathology — Kienböck«s disease. Because of it, the blood supply to the hand is disrupted and the lunate bone dies. Surgeons had to transplant bone for the patient and restore mobility to the hand.
First, specialists at the Center for Reconstructive Hand Microsurgery performed an osteotomy to reduce pressure on the damaged bone.
Osteotomy is a surgical operation involving artificial cutting of a bone to correct its shape, position, or length.

After that, the doctors took a fragment of the iliac bone from the young woman, preserving its blood vessels. They were immediately sutured to the vessels of the wrist to nourish the lunate bone. The operation was successful. After six weeks of rest, the patient began rehabilitation.
Saved a Lung

A young man with a very serious injury was admitted to Clinical Hospital No. 3: 50% of his left lung was damaged, and there were foreign objects in the wounds. Although there was very little hope of saving the organ, the doctors decided to take this step. The operation lasted two hours. Surgeon Mustakhim Satyvaldaev treated the wounds and removed the foreign objects.
“We decided to fight for the organ and, as a team, managed the patient and nursed him after the operation,” noted the attending surgeon Anton Savelyev.
As a result of the coordinated work, the doctors managed to preserve the organ. The man is now recovering after the operation, and lung function is gradually being restored. His health is no longer threatened.
This is the third collection of unique stories from doctors that we are sharing with you. Read the first one here — we published it in June. The second part was published in October.
