Samara District Rabies Outbreak Causes Paralysis and Death

Access to the infected area is restricted to authorized personnel only.
In Samara, a new focus of animal rabies has been discovered, this time in Krasnoglinsky district. Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev signed a decree establishing a quarantine there.
The epizootic focus of the disease was found in the settlement of Mekhzavod, house No. 21 in the 11th block. The territory within a one-kilometer radius adjacent to the focus has been declared an infected area.
Rabies is a fatal viral disease. It affects the central nervous system. It is transmitted through the bite of infected animals: cats, dogs, foxes, or bats. The virus enters the bloodstream with saliva. Symptoms of the disease are as follows:
- headache and muscle pain;
- increased salivation;
- hydrophobia (fear of water);
- aerophobia.
Then, the infected person exhibits unmotivated aggression, convulsions, paralysis, and death. The only way to avoid death is to urgently receive a vaccine, which must be administered immediately after an animal bite. Mortality after the appearance of first symptoms is 100%.
Entry to the disease foci is prohibited for outsiders. Exceptions include staff, specialists of the state veterinary service, as well as people living there. Treating infected animals, importing or exporting animals not vaccinated against rabies from the disease foci is prohibited.
Also, a moratorium is in effect on the movement and regrouping of susceptible animals, skinning their corpses, hunting, fairs, exhibitions, and capture for zoos.
«The quarantine can be lifted 60 days after the destruction of the last corpse of a sick or suspected rabid animal,» according to the published document.
Moreover, a rabies quarantine is also in effect in the center of Samara – in Oktyabrsky district. The disease focus was identified in a house on Maslennikov Avenue.
