We're Breathing This In': Why Murmansk Has Black Windowsills Again

Social media has seen many complaints about coal dust in Murmansk. Northerners and tourists are posting photos of black snow on the streets, and a black layer on cars and windowsills.

— We«re breathing this in. Are measurements taken periodically, is this being controlled now? How can we reassure our listeners? — asked a journalist from »Bolshoye Radio« at the press conference of Governor Andrei Chibis.

— Some coal has been moved to Lavna. This work will continue, including replacing cargo in the port — I can«t disclose all details yet, but we are in close coordination with colleagues, part of the port will be used for other cargo. As for the coal: according to my information, this is the result of extremely low temperatures during the New Year holidays. The cannons weren»t working in such weather, there was steam from the bay — this caused a one-time emission. There was no snowfall at the time. This is a local incident due to abnormal frosts — said Chibis.
