The press service of the St. Petersburg administration reported the introduction of a «yellow» level weather hazard on the evening of 22 January. This decision is linked to expected severe frosts and unfavorable conditions for the dispersal of harmful impurities in the air.

According to the notification, meteorological conditions forecast over three days could lead to an accumulation of pollutants in the atmosphere. In the «other hazards» category, the yellow level will be in effect from 21:00 on 22 January until 21:00 on 25 January.

A separate warning concerns anomalously low temperatures, which will drop to –20°C (–4°F) and below. This level of danger is set from 21:00 on 23 January until 10:00 on 24 January.

The cold snap, associated with an incursion of Arctic air from the east, began on the morning of 22 January. Experts expect the frost to begin easing around 27 January, when a cyclone bringing snowfall approaches the region.
