Smolny Updates Metro Development Plans Through 2031
In the updated draft of the state program for the development of St. Petersburg«s transport system, published on January 28, the goal is set to increase the operational length of metro lines by 11.9 km and put eight new stations into operation by 2031.
Previously, authorities announced plans to open ten stations by the end of 2030. Three of them — «Gorny Institut» (Mining Institute), «Putilovskaya», and «Yugo-Zapadnaya» (Southwestern) — have already opened. The remaining seven are planned to be completed: «Bogatyrskaya», «Kamenka», and «Teatralnaya» (Theatrical) in 2029, and «Bronevaya», «Zastavskaya», «Borovaya», and «Karetnaya» in 2030.
However, in the new version of the program, the count is from 2025, and only two stations — «Putilovskaya» and «Yugo-Zapadnaya» — are considered opened.
The next new station is planned for 2028. Apparently, this refers to the second exit from «Ligovsky Prospekt» station to the high-speed rail terminal, which in the future will become «Ligovsky Prospekt-2» station. This might be counted as one station in the statistics, although it will actually consist of a running tunnel, an inclined passage, and a pedestrian corridor.
Subsequently, the schedule coincides with the previously announced one: three stations in 2029 and four in 2030. At the same time, according to the program, the length of metro lines will increase only in 2029 by 4.9 km (launch of the green line section) and in 2030 by 7 km (brown line section). In 2028, no increase in length is expected, which may indicate either a scaled-back version of «Ligovsky Prospekt-2» or an exit from «Teatralnaya» station.
For the longer term, the program records plans to extend metro lines:
- brown line — to «Suvorovskaya» (and further to «Ruchyi») and «Sosnovaya Polyana»;
- green — to «Kamenka»;
- orange — to «Morskoi Fasad» (Sea Facade) and «Kudrovo»;
- purple — to «Kolomyazhskaya»;
- red — to «Pulkovo» and «Prospekt Marshala Zhukova» (Marshal Zhukov Avenue);
- construction of a new ring line.
Also planned is the construction of two exits from «Teatralnaya» station and new exits from «Vasileostrovskaya», «Primorskaya», and «Baltiyskaya».
Reconstruction with escalator replacement is planned for the stations:
- «Narvskaya»
- «Ploshchad Vosstaniya-1» (Uprising Square-1)
- «Kirovsky Zavod» (Kirov Plant)
- «Ploshchad Lenina-2» (Lenin Square-2)
- «Moskovskie Vorota» (Moscow Gates)
- «Baltiyskaya»
Without escalator replacement, reconstruction awaits «Ploshchad Alexandra Nevskogo-2» (Alexander Nevsky Square-2).
Comprehensive major repair with escalator replacement is planned for the stations:
- «Ploshchad Lenina-1» (Lenin Square-1)
- «Ploshchad Vosstaniya-2» (Uprising Square-2)
- «Petrogradskaya»
- «Grazhdansky Prospekt» (Civil Avenue)
