Pipe Burst Cuts Water to Over 15 Voronezh Homes

When the repair of another burst pipe will be completed is unknown.
RVK-Voronezh continues to work at the site of the emergency, which has left some residents of the Railway District without water. The drop in water pressure in homes on Artamonov and Bohdan Khmelnytsky streets became known on Sunday afternoon, January 25. In the evening, Rosvodokanal reported that the damage location was found — on a 25-centimeter diameter pipe near the house at Artamonov, 40. They said the «damage is hidden,» which is why it took so long to find.
RVK announced at 22:35 that water had been shut off in those areas. They explained that this is a «necessary measure to work with a »dry« pipeline during sub-zero temperatures (below 32°F). Otherwise, water will accumulate and freeze in the excavation pit» (in quotes).
Water taps ran dry in 10 houses:
- Artamonov Street: 24, 30a, 34, 36, 38, 38a, 40, 42
- Bohdan Khmelnytsky Street: 50b, 54b
Meanwhile, residents were pleased to learn that for the remaining 25 minutes — until 23:00 — two free drinking water dispensers would be operational at the addresses: Artamonov, 38V and Artamonov, 34/9.
On Monday morning, January 26, it became known that the pipe still had not been patched, and the list of houses where people are without water has expanded. Seven more were added:
- Bohdan Khmelnytsky Street: 54a, 56, 56a, 56b, 56v, 56g, 56d
RVK, of course, has reasons — well, it«s all complicated:
- First, a heating main runs above our water supply line. Also, an electric cable falls within the excavation zone. Because of this, specialists have to clear the water conduit from soil exclusively by hand, observing maximum precautions.
It is reported that overnight, emergency workers excavated two pits — one of 36 square meters and one of four square meters. During the work, free drinking water dispensers are again operational for residents at Artamonov, 38V and Artamonov, 34/9. How much longer the repairs will last and people will sit without amenities, for which they pay RVK considerable money, is not known.
Update. At 18:42, RVK-Voronezh reported that the accident had been fixed. About three meters of the leaky pipe were replaced.
