Metro escalators halted 1984 times in 2025
In 2025, 1984 incidents of foreign objects entering escalators were recorded in the St. Petersburg metro. Nearly 50 cases resulted in emergency stops and temporary station closures.

Information about almost two thousand incidents was published on January 29 by the Telegram channel «Nachalnik Transportnogo Tseha» (Head of the Transport Shop).
According to the State Unitary Enterprise «Petersburg Metro», last year foreign objects got into escalator mechanisms 1984 times. In 49 episodes, this required emergency stops of the moving stairs, and sometimes suspension of station operations.
Most often, the causes of malfunctions were:
- stones;
- backpack straps;
- coins;
- self-tapping screws;
- elements of clothing and shoes;
- metal objects;
- cart bag clips;
- stroller wheels.
The metro appealed to passengers to pay more attention to their personal belongings and prevent them from getting into the moving parts of escalators.
Earlier, on January 16, the «Pionerskaya» station was temporarily closed for entry after a coin got into the escalator mechanism.
