Irkutsk to Simulate Volcano Eruption on February 7–8
In childhood, almost everyone dreamed of adventures: traveling to the edge of the world, seeing real volcanoes, reaching the icy expanses of the Arctic, or touching the surface of colored lakes. These dreams often remain just a bookmark in a favorite adventure book or a mark on a globe. They can be realized even now, just in a different, accessible format.
On February 7–8, Irkutsk will host the «Planet Earth» science program for children and adults from Sciencely. Thanks to scientific experiments, labs, and interesting stories, guests will be able to explore the Arctic in detail, witness a volcano eruption, and learn why some bodies of water have unusual colors.
What awaits program participants
Volcano Lab. Participants will analyze volcanic lava, simulate an eruption, and learn why some volcanoes explode while others remain calm. Here, all processes related to the cataclysm and what happens afterwards will be explained in detail — scientifically and interestingly in the Sciencely style;
Rock Weathering Lab. Even the hardest rock breaks down over time. In the program, this process will be accelerated: they will recreate the action of wind and ocean currents, measure mineral hardness on the Mohs scale, and see what shapes stone acquires over hundreds of years;
Colored Lakes Lab. Using colored lakes as examples, participants will examine water samples, detect metal ions, and learn which living organisms can color bodies of water in unusual hues;
Arctic and Antarctic Lab. The program includes a journey to Earth«s ice caps and a discussion on how Arctic ice differs from Antarctic ice and what amazing phenomena occur there.
Adults will have their own program running in parallel. It includes scientific stand-up, a lecture, and a quiz with questions that go beyond school geography: for example, why Chinese tourists travel to Murmansk, when folk beliefs prohibit weddings, job changes, and home purchases, how the Moon formed, and what the terms flygskam and greenwashing mean.
The ticket price for one child is 2,200 rubles (approx. $24). A parent or relative can accompany them — with no limit on numbers. Using the promo code «IRСITY» gives a 5% discount. Groups of 14 or more people get a special price.
