Heavy Snowfall Expected in Nizhny Novgorod, Over 70 cm Possible

After a brief respite, Nizhny Novgorod is expecting another heavy snowfall. City Mayor Yuri Shalabaev warned of the approaching bad weather in his Telegram channel.
According to forecasts, the blizzard will begin on Tuesday, January 27, and last for several days. Snowdrifts in the city could grow significantly during this period.
«In the next four days, more than 70 cm of snow could fall! Given that this month has already seen 171% (!) of the monthly norm, this January has certainly secured a top spot among the snowiest,» the mayor wrote.
He added that Nizhny Novgorod has already surpassed Moscow and Kazan in precipitation this month. Heavy snowfalls covered the Nizhny Novgorod region during the New Year holidays, with half-meter snowdrifts forming in some areas in just a couple of days.
Shalabaev noted that on weekdays, during snowfall and heavy traffic, road clearing will be more challenging, and during morning and evening peak hours, equipment cannot be deployed in full force as it would only exacerbate problems.
«The remaining time will be used to the maximum, with round-the-clock operations. The transport administration (АТИ) will continue to monitor the work of district utility companies and homeowners» associations (HOAs), which during the last snowfall allowed a number of serious oversights,« the city head emphasized.
He separately appealed to drivers to assist road services by parking in a way that doesn«t hinder snow removal and, if possible, avoiding personal vehicle use during the blizzard.
Furthermore, no respite from snow is expected in February: according to preliminary forecasts from meteorologists, precipitation is anticipated to be above the monthly average. However, severe frosts are not on the horizon — the average monthly air temperature is forecast to be -6…-9°C (21…16°F), one degree higher than usual.
