City Mall Security Guard Flees After Fatal Clash

Surveillance cameras recorded how one of the security guards at the City Mall shopping and entertainment complex in St. Petersburg left the building through a service exit after an incident that resulted in the death of a visitor.
Police have detained two guards while searching for a third who fled the scene.
The incident occurred on the evening of January 21 on Kolomyazhsky Prospekt. Security guards stopped 24-year-old Dmitry at the entrance of the Perekryostok store, suspecting him of theft. According to recordings, the young man refused to open his backpack for inspection.
During the conflict, Dmitry pulled out an object resembling a pistol. In response, three security guards used force: a scuffle ensued, during which the visitor ended up on the floor. Two were holding him down, while the third tried to take the object away. One of the guards lay on top of Dmitry, another pressed on his back. The visitor shouted, «People, help, I»m suffocating!« before losing consciousness.
The rapid response team that arrived attempted to revive him but without success. Dmitry was taken to the hospital in a state of clinical death, where he died around midnight. Police detained two security guards—aged 19 and 64. Another one, aged 32, who, according to the investigation, lay on top of the victim, escaped through a back exit, and his whereabouts are being established.
Security for Perekryostok in City Mall is provided by OOO OP «Petersburg-Bezopasnost» (Petersburg-Safety LLC). The Primorsky District Prosecutor«s Office has begun an inspection of the private security company»s activities. The company announced an internal investigation and called the incident a tragedy.
According to a representative of the security company, the visitor, in addition to a gas canister, had a pistol from which he fired several shots. Police and the Investigative Committee previously reported only on the use of an aerosol device. The company confirmed the fact of theft.
A criminal case has been initiated under the article for causing death by negligence, so far without specifying specific individuals involved. The order was given by the head of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee for St. Petersburg, Pavel Vymenets. The exact cause of death will be determined by a forensic examination. The progress of the investigation will be reported to the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin.
