Appeal complaints from the lawyers of Alexander Pak, convicted of murder in the performance of public duty, have been filed with the Third Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction in Sochi.

A fatal traffic accident involving an expensive BMW crossover and Ekaterina Buravleva, a mother of many children, occurred on October 22, 2024, near the private boarding school «Sozvezdiye» on Bolshaya Street in Volgograd.

The Interior Ministry briefly outlined the official version: «According to preliminary information, at 15:05, the driver of a BMW opposite house No. 38 on Bolshaya Street hit a pedestrian and then fled the scene of the accident. Subsequently, the offender was detained. As a result of the accident, the pedestrian was taken to a medical facility.»

According to relatives, the incident began after the BMW cut off the woman. Buravleva got out of the car and made a remark, after which the driver intentionally ran her over in front of the children.

The victim was first taken to City Hospital No. 25, then transferred to the Skli fosovsky Research Institute in Moscow, but could not be saved.

The criminal case was initially opened under the article for traffic rules violation with leaving the scene of an accident, and later reclassified as murder of a person in connection with the performance of public duty.

The Volgograd Regional Court found Pak guilty and sentenced him to 11 years in a strict-regime colony, one year of restricted freedom, a three-year ban on driving, and a fine of 5 million rubles (approximately $50,000 at current rates).

The verdict was appealed. The defense filed four appeal complaints, the prosecutor — one submission. On January 14, the documents were transferred to the higher court, and the day before, the chancellery accepted them and appointed Judge Dmitry Ponomarenko. The hearing date has not yet been set.
