On 24 September the Church commemorates Venerable Theodora of Alexandria, who lived at the end of the 5th century. According to tradition, she was unfaithful to her husband after being deceived, later recognized her sin, and in repentance resolved to dedicate her life to God.

To hide from her husband, Theodora dressed in men’s clothing and entered a monastery under the name Theodor. After her death, her husband learned of his wife’s feat and himself took monastic vows in the same monastery.

In Rus’ this day was considered the time of autumn’s third meeting. Peasants finished their chores: they pulled the last onions from their beds, brought the beehives into the omshanik (bee wintering shed), and checked the sprouts of winter crops. If the shoots were strong and dense, a rich harvest was expected.

From Theodora’s day began «osenshchina» (autumn aid to clergy) — the tradition of helping the priest and his family with provisions and farm work. Villages held cabbage evening gatherings: women sliced and fermented cabbage, sang songs, and joked. These get‑togethers were called «kapustniki» (cabbage‑chopping parties), which is where the word comes from, preserved to this day. Men brewed beer, and the most valued was «korchazhnoe» (aged in large clay jars).

Many prohibitions were associated with Theodora’s memorial day. It was believed that one should not pick up items in the street or at crossroads, start important affairs, or make large purchases, as they would turn out badly. Idle talk was to be avoided. Women were advised not to paint their lips to avoid attracting gossip, and young spouses not to cook potato dishes — this was thought to portend quarrels. Washing one’s hair was also discouraged, as it could wash away one’s mind and memory.
