Riazan Photographer Shares How to Capture Northern Lights on Phone

The northern lights appear in a photo taken by Riazan photographer Vladimir Kolosov using a mobile phone.
In Riazan Oblast yesterday evening, the northern lights could be seen. Photographer Vladimir Kolosov managed to photograph this unique phenomenon. He shared secrets on how to do this using an ordinary phone.
— First of all, you need to understand that the aurora can be of two types: photographic and visual visibility. Mostly due to our location, we cannot often see bright bursts of the aurora with our eyes, so be prepared to capture it with photography equipment. You don«t necessarily need a camera; you can use a phone (Apple or Android, it doesn»t matter), — he wrote in his blog.
According to him, the manual settings on the phone can be adjusted to your interests.
— On Android, by going to the “more” or “pro” tab in camera mode, you can find various settings with numbers and letters; these are the very parameters (sensitivity — “ISO”, aperture — “f”, shutter speed — either “A” or “S”). Each phone has its own maximum values, but the essence doesn«t change. We are interested in two parameters — shutter speed and sensitivity: set the first to the maximum value (8, 10, or 30 seconds), the second based on the visibility of the night sky (definitely more than 1000; if the shot is dark, you can increase it), — writes the photographer.
Since the photograph is taken with a long exposure, you need to have a tripod, or set a timer for at least five seconds and place the phone against something so that it remains static.
— Well, and the most important thing — shoot where there is no light pollution from streetlights, the city itself, buildings, and so on. In my experience, it«s possible to shoot on the outskirts of the city, but it»s advisable to go out to the fields; an airfield is also good for shooting. The aurora comes from the northern side; for convenience, you can find the constellation “Ursa Major” and point the camera there! That will be the northern side.
Earlier we reported on five enthusiastic Riazan residents who are sharing space with the entire city.
